Career Interest

In your opinion, what are the biggest differences between career, job, and school? For you, what overlapping skills do you think you have probably already mastered (lucky you!) and how did you master them? Also, none of us is perfect, so what overlapping skills do you need to work on a little?

A job is something you do to make money or something that acts as a bridge between school and a career. A career is a long term job that holds a deeper goal.           School is what teaches and prepares for jobs and careers. School, and sometimes jobs, are not always catered to your specific interests, but they are still needed       for career preparation. Some skills that school has taught me are time management, how to memorize things, and how to analyze things. However, I am lacking         in my “people skills” which are very necessary for all careers, especially while applying and interviewing.

In what two areas did you score the highest? Explain some of the traits that are associated with these areas. In what two areas did you score the lowest? Explain some of the traits that are associated with these areas.

Artistic and Enterprising are the areas I scored the highest in. Some related traits are the preference of self-expression, working without rules, leading people,           making decisions, and risk-taking. Realistic and Conventional are the areas I scored the lowest in. Some related traits are the preference of hands-on problems,         working on developing realistic products, working outside, following routines, and working with details.

Did your scores surprise you in any way? If they did, explain why. If they were unsurprising, explain in a short anecdote from your life how this trait has already made itself clear.

My scores didn’t really surprise me because I do like being creative and performing projects, and I don’t like following routines and being social. I always like               doing art projects and designing/constructing things and I have never liked to “cage” my creativity by following set guidelines and routines. Also, I prefer to work         alone and avoid social contact with others.

List at least five professions that were recommended to you. Are these jobs that you yourself have considered pursuing? Did any of the recommendations come as a surprise to you?

Floral designer - have not considered before, not surprising

Fashion designer - considered when I was young, not surprising

Advertising and promotion manager - have considered - not surprising

Interior designer - considered when I was young - not surprising

Commercial designer - have considered - not surprising

Has this quiz altered your opinion of potential future goals and aspirations? Do you think you might investigate something that you didn’t know about before? Are you surprised at the schooling required for any career or the wages associated with a career suggested?

This quiz has opened up my mind and it has made me think about other careers than what I initially considered. I think that I knew the general idea of schooling         required for jobs but I am not as familiar with the wages associated with jobs.

Myers Briggs Analysis

According to the “Do What You Are” Inventory, what is your (letter combination) “Personality Type”? List your strengths and blind spots.

     ISTJ

I means that I am introverted, making me careful and focused on one thing at a time. S means I am a sensor, making me focus on facts and real things. T means I am a thinker, making me analytic and motivated by achievement. J means I am a judger which makes me practical and controlling with my work.

Consider your college satisfiers and career satisfiers in a short paragraph. Does anything surprise you about these results? How can you consider this as you make college and career choices?

The recommendations are very surprising and most are definitely not something I have an interest in. Many of the jobs in the “administration” field are not very           appealing to me because they just seem too boring and routine. The recommendations in the “marketing” field are much more accurate to something I might like       to do. The “manufacturing” field is something I would enjoy doing and may one day do as a side job or after I retire from a different job. However, I would like a             larger income than what a manufacturer would make. All the other available fields are marked as “not interested” which is mostly accurate, except that I would           be potentially interested to work in a “design” field or as a teacher for young children.

Look at your learning style. What aspects of this surprise you or reinforces what you already knew? Make sure to support your answer with evidence from your own academic career so far. How do you envision your learning style will make a difference as you move forward with school and career?

I think that every result is very accurate in my real learning style. I think my learning style is very practical and is mostly regarded as the “correct” way to learn;           traditional setting, bright light, high focus, and high self-motivation. My preferred learning setting is what is usually presented to me during school, and, in the             past, my learning style usually allows me good grades.
